Except when we're there! It started raining late this morning and is still raining steadily, and is expected to continue for a day or 2. I guess they need the rain, but it always seems to wait until we get here. Oh well, since it is shortly after Christmas, Thing 1 and Thing 2 have a few new things to keep them occupied and we grown ups have jigsaw puzzles and computers to while away the rainy days.
Shimmy took WonderMom (same gal as SuperMom but our other daughter changed her name on her blog) and I, and the Things out for lunch today at the Whole Food Company in Pasadena. It could only exist in California (Well maybe in NYC or Chicago with a different assortment of foods)! It is a grocery store on 2 floors with entirely organic produce, meat and dairy. Most of the canned and packaged stuff is also labeled organic. In addition to groceries, there is a bakery, a cheese market, a butcher counter, an Asian restaurant, a coffee bar, a salad bar, an international cuisine bar, a dessert bar, a fresh made sandwich bar, and a couple of soup bars. Several ethnic cuisines are available, but it is predominantly American, Asian and Mexican. You can dish out your own portions to go or to eat in at the limited bistro seating. We ate in and found the food very good if a little on the 'fru-fru' side as I like to call the California fare. Lots of fruits and nuts in most things. Lots of avacado dishes. Definitely not you standard mid-western fare. WonderMom bought a bagette (skinny French bread) and some brie cheese for breakfast in the morning (trying to recapture the ambiance of our trip to France 10 years ago!)
Got to iChat (IM for you PC folks - we're a Mac family) with our daughter back in Illinois to keep up with them and their activities. Also heard from our friend Bigmoon back home letting us know she is coping with the cold and snow.
Shimmy fixed us an interesting dinner tonight; an experiment for her. She got a new electric fondue pot for Christmas and has decided to use it frequently. Tonight we cooked shrimp and sliced beef in boiling water in the pot. When all of the beef and shrimp were cooked, some were left in the pot. She added Chinese noodles and spinach to the pot and let it brew for a few minutes. After adding some seasoning, she served it as soup. The shrimp was OK but the beef, not so much in my humble opinion. And the pot needed a little more flavoring, like maybe some sessemi oil, or something to give it a little zing. It was OK, again, a California kind of fare!
Enough prattling for the night. Hope to find something interesting to do tomorrow so I have something to write about. If I don't show up, you'll know we spent the day on the computer and solving jigsaw puzzles!
